Day 10 – The Light of Life – 2023
Day 10 – The Light of Life – 2023
“The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”
Psalm 27:1
Read Psalm 27:1-14
Fresno Pacific University celebrates Advent through the historic Festival of Lessons and Carols, with its dual theme of light and darkness. The “Bidding Prayer” begins: “God of mystery and light…We hear the story of Christ’s birth once again, filled with anticipation for the light which dispels the darkness…”
The “Third Lesson” recalls Isaiah’s prophecy: “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.”
The “Ninth Lesson” echoes John’s proclamation: “The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.”
Darkness continues to be common to human experience: the blackness of evening skies and power outages, the shadow of social distance and emotional distress, the corruption of governmental misdeeds and unjust systems. We spend our personal resources—time, energy and money—trying to dispel the darkness in our lives.
Psalm 27 speaks of different resources. The psalmist calls to God for help and the Lord brings light and salvation into dire circumstances. Fear is vanquished; there is refuge and rest. God’s deliverance is so profound that the one who is saved testifies to “one thing” becoming the foundation of life.
God of light and life, help us to hear your voice, and place our trust fully in you. Shine your light in our darkness and bring your life into our world. Be our stronghold as we learn to dwell in you.
