Day 1 – Sharing Christ’s Inheritance from Tim Geddert, Ph.D.

Day 1 – Sharing Christ’s Inheritance from Tim Geddert, Ph.D.

Ask me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession.

Psalm 2:8

When Jesus was baptized, his Father’s voice declared, among other things, “You are my Son,” directly quoting Psalm 2:7. That verse is followed by the words quoted above. Because of God’s work in the world, Jesus, the beloved Son, “will inherit the nations.” In fact, Jesus is already beginning to “inherit the nations” as the Good News of God’s saving work reaches out to the ends of the earth.

Those who belong to Jesus “inherit the nations” along with Christ. This of course does not mean that we “run the world.” Rather, it means we are Christ’s co-workers and co-inheritors of God’s Kingdom as it takes root within a still-fallen world. And one day, when Jesus claims his rightful throne as King of Kings and Lord of Lords, those who confess Jesus will reign with Christ in the fulfilled Kingdom of God.

I’ve been privileged to teach Bible at the seminary for 35 years. I’ve aimed to inspire, and I’ve been inspired by, students from many nations, as well as countless North Americans who have witnessed and served around the world. God has a global vision! At the seminary, so do we. All of us share in the wonderful privilege and calling to participate in God’s great mission, as God’s will is done on earth as in heaven, one act of faithful service and witness at a time.

One day we will see and proclaim: “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah, and he will reign for ever and ever” (Rev. 11:15). That is our great Advent hope!

God, open our eyes to see how you are at work in the world. Prepare our hearts and hands to join you in the ways you invite us to participate. Rekindle our confidence in your final victory. Amen
