The purpose of the FPU Norma P. Dick Scholarship is to honor the founder of the FPU Teacher Librarian (TL) Program and benefit FPU students pursuing the California Teacher Librarian Services Credential. Mrs. Dick was a teacher and administrator in the Clovis Unified School District prior to establishing the TL Program at FPU in 1991. She retired from the program in 1999 and passed away in 2013. Mrs. Dick is remembered for her tremendous contributions to the school library community.
Scholarship applicants must meet the following criteria to be eligible for consideration:
- Enrolled in or considering enrolling in the teacher librarian credential program at Fresno Pacific University
- Profess a biblical belief in Jesus Christ and model biblical leadership qualities
- Display an understanding of the role of the teacher librarian and possess a strong commitment to promoting the stated goals and objectives of the teacher librarian program
- Consideration given to those students experiencing the greatest need
I am pleased to share that this year’s recipient of the Norma P. Dick Scholarship is Laura Vallenari, who is finishing the TL Credential program while serving as the teacher librarian of Kingsburg High School. She demonstrates incredible passion for the career through her commitment to working several small jobs in addition to her full-time TL position and coursework requirements while raising her two adopted daughters as a single mother. Though Laura acknowledges that these circumstances are very challenging, she feels very blessed and thankful to God for His provision.
Since the Norma P. Dick Scholarship is an endowed fund, we are only able to award the interest to the recipient. In 2016, this totaled $550. To raise this award to $1,000, we would need to add an additional $10,000 to the endowment. If you feel led to donate to benefit more students like Laura, you can do so via http://www.fresno.edu/give/ways-give – just list “For Norma P. Dick Scholarship” on your donation. Thank you!
